Final Three Races.
There's two weekends to forget about, and one to
half remember! After qualifying in the middle of the pack at Oulton
Park, I'd made up a load of places in the opening lap to find
myself 10th over the start finish line. As we exited Old Hall
corner, unknown to me, Gaffeny had slid off the road and had hit
the wall and was sliding back into the middle of the track. As
Osbourne jinked left to avoid him, I was left completely unsighted,
and could do nothing to avoid slamming into the back of his stationary
car at close to 80mph. Glew unsighted behind me, then slammed
into me at the same speed. This left my car completely written
off front and back, and even the engine and gearbox were cracked,
and in some places the metal was sheared in two.
Then at Silverstone the next round, I had a freak accident in
Friday testing that required a re-shell on my car. So I went into
qualifying with no knowledge of the track, and subsequently ended
up on the back row for both races. Contact in the first race put
me out early, and torrential rain in the second made driving at
the back with the entire fields spray almost impossible.
At the final round held at Brands I came in for my qualifying
pitstop and complained about a grinding noise on the left side
of my car. The team couldn't find anything wrong, and said to
go do the best I could. Starting my flying laps, the sound go
worse, at which point the rear left wheel bearing collapsed, and
the wheel came free and left my car at speed. I just about managed
to control the car and get it back to the pits on three wheels.
The first race was pretty uneventful from the back, and I finished
where I started, minus anyone that threw themselves off the racetrack.
The second race went a little better, and I picked off cars almost
every lap, and went from 25th to 15th. And to prove my point even
further, set the fastest lap of the race. While this would have
been even better had I started the race at the sharp end, it still
ended the season on a reasonable high.
